How to make a bathroom truly watertight
A beautiful bathroom is one thing; a bathroom that is still leak-free after ten years is real craftsmanship. The difference lies beneath the tiles.
A watertight build-up beneath the tiles
Before we tile, we apply a liquid seal to the wet areas, with sealing tape in the corners and around the shower drain. Sealant alone is not waterproofing. This invisible layer decides whether your bathroom is still dry in ten years' time.
Fall, pipework and ventilation
The shower floor is given the correct fall towards the drain, otherwise water stays put. We replace old pipework straight away, because getting to it later means breaking things open again. Good mechanical ventilation or a heat-recovery unit removes moisture and prevents mould, especially in a room without a window.
Choosing tiles and sanitaryware
Large tiles look calm, but call for a flat substrate; small tiles and mosaic give more grip. A walk-in shower is stunning, but places higher demands on fall and sealing. We think along with you about what suits your space and how you use it.
Common mistakes
- No fall, or too little, towards the shower drain, leaving water standing.
- Relying on sealant instead of a membrane, resulting in leaks to the floor below.
- Underestimating the ventilation, so mould appears in the grout within a year.
Tackling more at the same time? Combine it with a full home renovation or a new kitchen while the pipework is open anyway.
